ANA ALASTRUEY IZQUIERDO

Ana Alastruey-Izquierdo is a research scientist at the Mycology Reference Laboratory of the Spanish National Centre for Microbiology from the Instituto de Salud Carlos III, the main National Public Health Institute in Spain. She has a strong national and international experience with scientific stays in several countries and leading roles in main mycological organizations. Of special relevance has been her role in the development of the first Fungal Priority Pathogen List (FPPL) by WHO in which she has chaired the International Technical Advisory Group.

Ana is President of the Spanish Society of Mycology (AEM) and chairs the Fungal Infection Study Group (EFISG) from ESCMID (European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases). Is the Director of Latin American Programs for GAFFI the only global NGO devoted to fight fungal infections in which she is supporting programs in Argentina and Guatemala. And is part of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Joint Program Initiative on Antimicrobial Resistance (JPI-AMR) and expert in the WHO Global AMR research agenda in the human health sector.

Ana has an MsC in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology from Complutense University (Madrid, Spain). She has a PhD in Medical Mycology. After completing her degree, she was a Postdoctoral researcher at the Public Health Research Institute (New Jersey, USA) working in antifungal resistance. She has been a visitor Scientist at The Fungal Biodiversity Centre (CBS, Utrecht, The Netherlands), Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT, Seibersdorf, Austria) and European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI, Hinxton, UK).

Her main area of research is focused in Medical mycology: Identification and early diagnosis of invasive fungal infections, standardization of antifungal susceptibility testing methods, resistance mechanisms to antifungals, taxonomy of fungal species, molecular biology and mycobiome. She has published over 150 peer reviewed papers, including several guidelines for diagnosis of fungal infections and book chapters, she has an H index of 48 Global i10 index of 115. She is regular speaker and chair of national and international conferences. She is associate editor for Journal of Fungi and belongs to the editorial board of other international journals.
